In order to assist Armenia’s Ministry of Health with ongoing health system improvements and reforms, with an emphasis on primary care, mental health, and quality of care, a WHO delegation traveled to Armenia, the World Health Organization (WHO) press release states.

The crew went to the Surb Grigor Lusavorich (SGL) Medical Center in Yerevan to learn more about the primary care and hospital services offered in Armenia. It also went to the nursing college associated with the Medical Center as well as the paediatric psychiatric referral center, the press release writes.

Dr. Natasha Azzopardi-Muscat, Director of Country Health Policies and Systems for WHO/Europe, praised the ongoing health system reform and emphasized the necessity of digitizing health systems, noting that such tools have the potential to significantly improve primary care performance and reach those who need it.

She expressed her happiness at being able to observe firsthand the adjustments and improvements being made to Armenia’s healthcare system, it is said in the press release. In addition, Azzopardi-Muscat noted that speaking with and meeting with medical professionals allowed her to better understand their needs and observe their enthusiasm and dedication, which contribute to the provision of high-quality healthcare for patients in their communities.

She expressed her optimism that the reforms might be expanded upon in other parts of the nation, ensuring that everyone could access the treatment they require, per the press release.

The COVID-19 epidemic brought to light the importance of primary healthcare, which serves as the point of entry for most people into the healthcare system. According to the WHO, primary care facilities and employees were able to continue providing crucial medical services despite the increase in demand brought on by the health crisis. WHO/Europe implores all nations to make sure that this model endures beyond the pandemic, the press release concludes.
