The first 600 of more than 1,000 containers of NATO temporary housing for Turkey were transported on a commercial ship that departed Taranto, Italy, on Sunday night (19 February 2023), a press release states.
The shipment is the result of collaboration between NATO’s Allied Joint Force Command Naples and the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) to hasten the supply of temporary accommodation for at least 4,000 persons affected by the recent catastrophic earthquakes. It is anticipated to arrive in Iskenderun the following week, at which point the equipment will be unloaded and brought to the camp’s location.
The camp’s location has been prepared, and a NATO joint civilian-military operational liaison and reconnaissance team has been organizing logistics and local assistance. In order to handle the ship’s offloading and loading outside of regular port hours, the Taranto port opened its doors on the weekend. NATO is also in charge of organizing the transport of tents from Pakistan to Turkey.
On February 16, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg traveled to Turkey to meet with President Erdogan and other top leaders and to show support for the Turkish people. He traveled to the troubled areas and interacted with the NATO liaison and reconnaissance team there.
