As a result of the worldwide military conflict in Ukraine, which broke out on February 24, 2022, millions of people have fled their homes both domestically and internationally in pursuit of safety, a press release states.

Since 24 February 2022, more over 2.46 million border crossings into Romania from Moldova and Ukraine have been reported. According to figures from the Government of Romania, there were 101,641 refugees registered for temporary protection in Romania as of December 27, 2022, making a total of 106,542 Ukrainian refugees living there. Eighty percent of the refugees are women and children.

In accordance with the priorities and initiatives outlined in the National Plan of Measures for the Protection and Inclusion of Displaced Persons from Ukraine Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection in Romania, which was published in June 2022, the UNHCR, along with other UN agencies and NGOs, is supporting the government’s response through inter-agency coordination within the framework of the refugee coordination model and a regional refugee response plan (RRP) – April 2022.

Through its field offices in Suceava (bordering Ukraine), Galati (bordering Moldova and Ukraine), its national office in Bucharest, and its field presence in Iasi, UNHCR is addressing the needs of refugees from Ukraine in Romania (border with Moldova). Additionally, UNHCR is present at the Timisoara-based Emergency Transit Center for refugees.

In addition, UNHCR is carrying out projects in 12 counties across Romania in collaboration with 16 national and international NGOs.
