France’s AFD grants Moldova € 60mln to restore energy, railway sectors

France is lending Moldova 60 million euros to restore railways and energy sectors

According to Moldova’s finance minister, the French Development Agency, AFD, would lend the country 60 million euros ($59 million) to fund improvements in the energy and railroad industries.

The finance ministry stated in a news statement that the agreed-upon loan will be paid back in a single installment over a period of 15 years, including a grace period of 5 years.

The parliament of Moldova must approve the loan.

The AFD declared in May that it is taking the loan into consideration. The organization also stated at the time that its activities in Moldova will concentrate on the country’s progressive acclimatization to EU norms in preparation for EU membership, the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, and the adaptation to the effects of the war in Ukraine.

France committed help totaling around 126 million euros at the Moldova Support Conference held on April 5 in Berlin, including 75 million euros via AFD. In order to help Moldova deal with the effects of the war in Ukraine, the French state granted the first financial aid of 15 million euros in mid-April.

Moldova, as well as Ukraine now have EU candidate status, after the EU Council’s decision in June.
