The historic Shusha Declaration, which Turkiye and Azerbaijan signed to elevate bilateral cooperation to the level of an alliance, is the “pinnacle of ties,” according to the Azerbaijani prime minister last week, Anadolu Agency reported.
Ali Asadov recounted the liberation of the city from Armenian control in November 2020 while speaking at a joint media briefing in Shusha with Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay.
Concerning the links between Turkey and Azerbaijan, he said that the Shusha Declaration elevated their relationship to that of a strategic alliance.
“We are grateful to President (Recep Tayyip) Erdogan and the Turkish people who stood by the Azerbaijani state and people from the first days of the 44-day war of the homeland. We will never forget this support,” foreign minister Asadov said, as quoted by Anadolu Agency.
Oktay, for his part, reaffirmed Türkiye’s support for Azerbaijan by bringing up their strategic ties.
According to him, the bilateral relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan have a particular place for Shusha, the cultural capital of Azerbaijan and a city of enormous significance for the Turkic world.
As for the Shusha Declaration, Oktay emphasized that it represents the pinnacle of ties with Azerbaijan.
On June 15, 2021, at Shusha, Karabakh, Azerbaijan, the presidents of the two nations signed the Declaration of Shusha on the Relations of Alliance Between the Republic of Türkiye and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The statement is the initial document that Ankara and Baku have signed that uses the phrase “alliance.”
