Slovakian Slovnaft Refinery to Start Processing Azerbaijani Oil

Following the news of the Hungarian oil and gas company MOL that it has started transporting crude oil from Azerbaijan to Slovnaft’s refinery in Bratislava, Slovnaft refinery announced Monday it will start processing the oil in April, Azernews reports.

Situated in Bratislava, Slovakia, Slovnaft’s refinery is owned by the Hungarian MOL Group.

The first shipment of around 90,000 tons of seaborne crude produced at the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli oil field in Azerbaijan – where MOL Group is co-owner with a 9.57 percent share – was transported via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline from the Sangachal oil terminal near Baku to the port of Ceyhan in Turkey, and then via the Adria pipeline from Croatian port of Omišalj.

Transporting the Azeri oil to the refinery in Slovakia is a success story for the MOL Group. as it represents the completion of its supply chain.

The Hungarian oil and gas company underscored that, with this transport chain, it has taken a historic step in diversifying supply and rounding off the production process “from field to vehicle”.

MOL Group considers this as a big step in its efforts to increase flexibility in the procurement of crude oil – which is its key priority – creating in the process a fully integrated value chain that will enable the company to sell petroleum derivates and products processed and refined in their own refinery from crude oil extracted from an oil field in which MOL is a shareholder.

In 2022, the total ACG production was on average about 415,400 barrels per day (bpd) or about 152 million barrels (20 million tons) in total. Divided per platform, the average production from the Chirag was 25,200 bpd, 104,100 bpd from the Central Azeri, 106,400 bpd from the West Azeri, East Azeri produced around 64,000 bpd, Deepwater Gunashli  was at 76,300 bpd and the West Chirag platform produced 39,400 bpd.

During the reporting period, the total volume of oil production in Azerbaijan amounted to 32.6 million tons, 26.3 million tons of which were exported.
