Number of Cybercrimes Up 25 Times in Russia in Five Years

Prosecutor General of Russia Igor Krasnov demanded to intensify the fight against cyber crimes. According to him, over the past five years, the number of such crimes in the country has grown 25 times, and since the beginning of the year the negative trend has intensified, Kommersant reported.

“The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation drew attention to the need to improve the current legislation in terms of expanding the signs of crimes in the field of IT technologies, introducing the concept of “electronic evidence” into procedures, procedures for extrajudicial blocking of mirrors of previously blocked sites … He pointed out the need for active participation of all departments,” the agency said in a statement.

The Attorney General also drew attention to the low detection rate of such crimes – 25%. According to him, if for the whole of 2019, more than 294 thousand cybercrimes were recorded, then in the first half of 2020 their number is already 225 thousand.

At the end of 2019, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced its intention to create a department to combat crimes in the IT sphere. The timing of the creation of the department in the department did not specify. According to experts, during the quarantine measures introduced to combat the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the number of cybercrimes continued to increase.
