During her official visit to Tajikistan from November 28, to December 9, 2022, UN Special Rapporteur Mary Lawlor will evaluate the state of human rights defenders there, a press release writes.

The visit will offer a chance to talk about the plight of human rights advocates as well as the main issues and difficulties that the nation’s civil society is now dealing with.

Lawlor declared that she would concentrate on Tajikistan’s implementation of the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders and other pertinent international human rights instruments in order to create a supportive and enabling environment for human rights defenders to engage in their legal and peaceful activities to advance and defend human rights.

Lawlor stated that in addition to looking at current and proposed measures to protect human rights defenders, she will also look at the environment for establishing and managing non-governmental organizations, as well as the freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, and access to legal aid.

The expert will meet with representatives of government organizations, UN representatives, representatives of regional human rights mechanisms, members of civil society organizations, human rights defenders, attorneys, journalists, and other pertinent stakeholders during her visit.

A press conference will be held by the Special Rapporteur so that she can brief the media on her initial findings. On Friday, December 9, 2022, at 1500 local time, it will take place at UN Headquarters in Dushanbe, 5/1 Lohuti Street. Journalists will only be permitted to access.

The UN Human Rights Council will be given the Special Rapporteur’s conclusions and recommendations in March 2024.

Ms. Mary Lawlor is from Ireland and is currently serving as the Special Rapporteur on the status of human rights defenders.

She works at the Trinity College Dublin, where she holds the position as an adjunct professor of business and human rights. The International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, Front Line Defenders, was founded by her.
