Eight Tajik Migrant Workers Die in Moscow Area Greenhouse Fire

A greenhouse farm in a Moscow suburb burned down on Tuesday morning, with eight people killed and one other person injured, Russian emergency services said, according to AP.

All eight victims were migrants from Tajikistan who apparently worked at the farm.

The fire broke out in one of the metal construction trailers where workers lived. Local firefighters battled the blaze for an hour. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused it.

According to RIA Novosti, the total fire area was 240 square meters. The dismantled structures are being disassembled.

Earlier, Russian media wrote that two people became victims of the fire that occurred in an apartment building in the city of Novocherkassk, Rostov Region.

The number of deadly fires traditionally grows in Russia during the New Year and Christmas holidays on the first week of January. The country’s emergency services usually attribute the trend to elaborate celebrations that often include use of fireworks and an increase in alcohol consumption.
