US provides $30 mln energy aid package to Moldova

In order to combat the surge in energy costs brought on by Russia’s war on Ukraine, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced that it will provide Moldova $30 million (28.6 million euros) in direct financial support, See News reported.

The $320 million in emergy aid package that the United States has given to Moldova since February when the Kremlin began its invasion of Ukraine, was a key component of the funding, which was obtained through the World Bank Multi-Donor Trust Fund, USAID said in a press release last week. It will help Moldova in a process of reimbursement for earlier verified electricity purchases.

The social and economic fallout from the war in Ukraine put Moldova’s short- and long-term economic recovery at risk, according to USAID, just as the country was recovering from a string of devastating shocks, including the COVID-19 pandemic, a drought that severely affected agricultural production, and the 2021 European gas crisis.

According to a social media post by Maia Sandu, president of Moldova, the financial support measure will assist Moldova in coping with the winter’s hardships and preserving stability in the nation.

According to Moldova’s finance minister at the time, the United States announced intentions to give the country energy aid of over $49.5 million in November 2022 to help it improve its energy security and diversify its supply sources.
