Uzbekistan Announces New Strategy, Increase in Renewables Deployment

Uzbekistan’s Energy Ministry announced on Monday that a new resolution on measures to accelerate the introduction of renewable energy sources and energy-saving technologies in 2023 has been adopted by the President of Uzbekistan.

In line with the resolution, large solar and wind power plants with a capacity of 2,100 MW will be put into operation in the country.

Uzbekistan will also help install solar panels with a capacity of 1,200 MW on households, buildings, social facilities, and economic entities’ structures and entice entrepreneurs to install small solar power plants with a capacity of 550 MW.

The plants and panels planned with the project will produce additional 5 billion kWh of electric energy, saving 4.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the process.

The Uzbek government plans to allocate $100 million from the state budget for the financing of this project, whose total value amounts to about $15.4 billion, whereas the rest of the costs will be covered by other sources.

Around $13.4 billion will come from funds from investors within the framework of public-private partnership projects, the loans from commercial banks will cover for $1.1 billion while additional funds will be provided by enterprises ($610 million) and foreign financial organizations’ funds ($150 million).

Earlier this month, a new solar power unit with a total capacity of 1.3 MW was put into operation in Uzbekistan’s Sirdaryo region’s thermal power plant.

Apart from generating an additional 2.3 million kWh of electricity, the unit will save 750,000 cubic meters of natural gas, reducing emissions in the process.
