Tajikistan Launches Multimodal Transport Corridor via Iran

Senior officials from Tajikistan and Iran attended the inauguration ceremony last week held in Dushanbe of the first freight train from Tajikistan to Turkey, which began its journey through Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Iran.

The opening ceremony of the multimodal transport corridor along Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Turkey’s territories, was organized by the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan and attended by senior officials from the mentioned countries as well as by transport companies, businessmen, and transport officials.

At the same time, Tajikistan held a logistics conference with the participation of various countries, with bilateral meetings held between the Minister of Transport of Tajikistan, the Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan, and Iran on the sidelines of the conference regarding the expansion of cooperation, especially in transit.

One of the most important agendas of these meetings was targeting 20 million tons of freight transit through Iran’s territory – triple the current volume- initially agreed during the first ministerial summit on transit cooperation among regional countries on October 8-9

The delegation from Iran also visited Tajikistan’s free zone in the city of Kulob, which is supposed to be the center of Tajikistan’s trade, transit, and industry.

Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, on the other hand, agreed upon a joint action plan and new transit agreement so the bilateral cooperation between the strategic partners can be operational both along the north-south corridor and in the east-west corridor.

Meanwhile, Dushanbe is also taking steps to integrate modern technologies into the development of its other transport systems which requires modernization of the segment and the introduction of modern technologies to upgrade the industry.

There are several taxi companies currently offering services in Tajikistan – such as Somon Taxi, Rakhsh, and Asia Express – but their interface, number of available cars, and delivery speed are far behind their international competitors like Uber.
