UNICRI issued a report on the situation on the border of Ukraine, a ReliefWeb press release reads.

With a focus on Moldova, this research evaluates the impact of the conflict in Ukraine and its consequences for organized crime and security-related issues for surrounding nations.

These consist of:

  • organized crime and illegal trafficking (including the trade in illicit tobacco, drugs, guns, and other products as well as people);
  • Internet fraud and criminality
  • propaganda and false information; and
  • risks from CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) sources.

In order to help concerned stakeholders at the national and regional levels identify lessons learned and direct future initiatives to manage risks in the aforementioned areas, this report offers crucial suggestions.

UNICRI has been operating in Ukraine and the Eastern Partnership nations of the European Union for more than 50 years, collaborating closely with both governmental and non-governmental organizations on a national and regional scale. To help the design and execution of an integrated security plan to address the changing regional security context, the Moldovan Ministry of Internal Affairs asked UNICRI in March 2022 to identify critical priority needs.

UNICRI conducted this research to support all significant players concerned with justice, crime prevention, and security-related issues in the area. It did so through an assessment of new and nuanced security concerns aggravated by the conflict in Ukraine.

This report’s numerous and dynamic difficulties demand immediate cooperation. Given that the problems are widespread in the region, regional coordination is essential. Border law enforcement agencies have to enhance communication and collaboration across borders and in the region to start sharing real-time information and intelligence on criminal activities and trafficking routes because transnational crime groups are progressively surpassing national criminal justice reactions.

UNICRI will keep making use of its experience in order to improve knowledge and capabilities to address emerging criminal and security-related trends and to craft effective responses.
