Moldova, NATO aim to boost cooperation

The country’s neutrality is guaranteed by its constitution, according to Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu, who announced that the country is not seeking NATO membership.

Popescu noted that Moldova’s neutrality does not, however, imply self-isolation, demilitarization, or indifference to international events, as he told reporters on the occasion of a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Bucharest, the capital of Romania.

During the two-day gathering, NATO ministers committed to giving Moldova, Georgia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina more specialized help since, according to Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, these nations are under pressure from Russia due to Moscow’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine.

Thousands of migrants have arrived in Moldova, one of the poorest nations in Europe, as a result of Russia’s unjustified invasion of neighboring Ukraine. Power outages and shortages have also been brought on by Moscow’s attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

Popescu said that missiles fired from Russia that were aimed at Ukraine had violated Moldovan airspace, and one of the missiles had even landed there.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu said on Twitter that the missiles also caused significant energy disruptions in Moldova, with what nation reporting that half of the country was currently experiencing blackouts.

Most of the capital city of Chisinau, where a third of the Moldovan population resides, had electricity restored within a few hours, according to the BBC.

The strikes in Ukraine on November 15 also caused severe power outages in Moldova, according to Spinu. Mobile networks were adversely impacted as well.

After the ministerial meeting, Stoltenberg stated at a press conference that the alliance will increase its assistance for the three nations, although he did not elaborate on the nature of that help.

The previous day, Stoltenberg announced that NATO is going to provide Ukraine with all the help necessary, including non-lethal aid, such as including gasoline and generators.
