Kyrgyzstani parliament member elected their new speaker

Nurlanbek Shakiev was appointed as the next Speaker of the Kyrgyzstani parliament during a session on Wednesday.

Shakiev, 45, was voted as Speaker of the Kyrgyzstani Parliament on Wednesday as the result of a secret ballot, according to the Xinhua news agency. There were 80 votes in favor and six votes against him.

Shakiev was chosen as a deputy in the 7th convocation of the parliament in 2021. He serves as the faction’s Ata-Zhurt Kyrgyzstan head.

He worked for Kurmanbek Bakiev’s former administration from 2006 until 2010, first as press secretary and then as an adviser. He served as the ministry’s culture and information minister from 2010 and 2011. His NewTV channel was established in 2017.

Talant Mamytov, who left his position earlier on Wednesday, will be replaced by Shakiev.
