The Government of Japan will donate $1 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in the Kyrgyz Republic to help the thousands of people impacted by the recent border hostilities between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, ReliefWeb says citing a UNHCR report.

According to His Excellency Hideki Goda, the Japanese ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic, the Japanese government hopes that this aid will help the people of the Kyrgyz Republic overcome their difficulties and address the humanitarian situation brought on by the fighting along their border with Tajikistan.

The UN agencies will be able to deliver humanitarian aid, such as food, housing, protection, and non-food goods, thanks to the Emergency Grant Aid.

To address the needs of the vulnerable populations impacted by the fighting, WFP will receive US$500,000. Following the completion of community recovery projects, the World Food Program (WFP) will provide fortified wheat flour and vegetable oil to internally displaced people (IDPs), host families, and returnees in accordance with the strategy agreed upon with the Kyrgyz Government and with the assistance of Japan.

In order to safeguard those who have been displaced by the violence and those who have returned, UNHCR will receive US$500,000. These protection efforts will include identifying and mitigating protection risks as well as offering legal support to restore civilian documents. With the assistance of Japan, UNHCR will also be able to provide emergency shelter and basic relief supplies to IDPs, returnees, and host communities, protecting them from the harsh Kyrgyz winter.

Within three months, the Batken and Osh provinces will receive aid from the WFP and UNHCR on behalf of more than 55,000 vulnerable individuals.

Over 140,000 people were displaced by violence in the southern Kyrgyz Republic near the Tajikistan border in mid-September. The Disaster Response Coordination Unit (DRCU), an inter-agency coordination mechanism with participation from UN Agencies, the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, and non-governmental organizations, was activated in support of the government by the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the UN Country Team in the Kyrgyz Republic. While WFP is in charge of the Food Security and Logistics Sectors of this interagency humanitarian response, UNHCR is in charge of the Protection Sector and contributes to the Emergency Shelter/NFI response.
