Moldova garners support for EU membership from Estonia

During a trip to Tallinn early this week, Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu was assured that Estonia fully welcomes Moldova’s application to join the European Union and will share its experiences, ERR reports.

During his stay, the Moldovan official spoke with the deputy Enn Eesmaa, Riigikogu’s Foreign Affairs Committee chairman, and other officials.

According to Sutt, it was a significant turning point when the European Council offered Moldova candidate status for the EU last summer.

“I hope that, despite the difficult security and economic situation, Moldova will make rapid progress with the necessary steps and will be able to start accession negotiations as soon as possible,” he said.

The war Russia is waging in Ukraine was also a topic of discussion, and Sutt praised Moldova for its effectiveness in managing the enormous influx of war refugees.

On top of the migrant influx, Moldova is facing serious issues with energy supply, as the small nation is severely affected by Moscow’s aerial raids on Ukrainian power grids.

Moldova is largely dependent on other countries when it comes to energy, and to cope this winter the country was forced to resort to importing energy from other neighbors, like Romania.
