Azerbaijan pushes for double the gas export to Europe

Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov said in an interview with Euronews Bulgaria, Azerbaijan wants to double its gas exports to Europe by 2027.

“We are already in talks with our partners, both foreign and local. Our idea is to increase our production. President Ilham Aliyev mentioned today what quantities we are talking about, and our aim is to double these quantities by 2027. This is a key priority for us. Now the question is how these quantities will be distributed among the various European countries, and it should be determined by the EU’s member states themselves,” Jabbarov said, as quoted by AzerNews.

Regarding the bilateral ties between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria, Jabbarov highlighted that Baku is looking at all possibilities to provide as much gas to Bulgaria as feasible.

Additionally, according to the economy minister, the energy company of Azerbaijan will establish a branch office in Bulgaria.

The Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria will receive a yearly 1 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan and Bulgaria. The Kulata-Sidirokastro connecting point was used to supply Azerbaijani gas to Bulgaria, nevertheless, as the IGB was still being built.

The pipeline is built with the ability to raise its capacity by up to 5 bcm/y based on market demand and the capabilities of nearby gas transmission networks.

A ceremony to inaugurate the pipeline was conducted in Bulgaria on October 1 and the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) had its inauguration ceremony on July 8 in Komotini.
