The ambassador of Azerbaijan to Albania, Anar Huseynov, stated that Azerbaijan is in support of investments in Albania, particularly in the area of energy infrastructure, Azernews reports.
The envoy said he thought Albania might benefit from Azerbaijan’s natural gas, but he also said that the matter was complicated by a lack of the necessary energy infrastructure.
“The EU and Azerbaijan also share the ambition to accelerate the development and deployment of renewable energy generation and transmission capacity to fully reap the synergies between the EU’s clean energy transition and Azerbaijan’s strong untapped renewable energy potential, in particular in the offshore energy sector,” Huseynov said.
Speaking of the energy-related memorandum of understanding between Azerbaijan and the EU, the ambassador emphasized that it marked a new turning point in the relationship and contained a promise to double the Southern Gas Corridor’s capacity to deliver at least 20 billion cubic meters of gas to European markets annually by 2027.
Azerbaijan is already expanding its natural gas supply to the EU, from 8.1 billion cubic meters in 2021 to an anticipated 12 billion cubic meters in 2022, the diplomat continued, adding that this will help the EU achieve its diversification goals.
Speaking further about the agreements made during the visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Serbia, the ambassador said that depending on how long it would take for them to be implemented, they may be classified as short-term or mid-term.
