Azerbaijan, IOM to boost cooperation on refugee support

UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Azerbaijan have been discussing ways in which they can offer support to refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), Anadolu Agency reports.

“During the meeting, satisfaction was expressed with the current level of cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the International Organization for Migration, issues on the international migration agenda and prospects for future development of cooperation in this field were exchanged,” Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said in an official statement.

At the meeting in Baku with IOM Director-General Antonio Vitorino, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov highlighted that Azerbaijan has effectively regulated migration issues through successful migration policies and institutional reforms.

The foreign minister also provided detailed information on the restoration and reconstruction efforts in the Karabakh region, emphasizing the priority of stable settlement for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in their homeland.

The Karabakh region was liberated from Armenian occupation after a 44-day conflict between Baku and Yerevan in the fall of 2020.

Vitorino acknowledged the progress made by Azerbaijan in managing migration and expressed the readiness of the IOM to continue supporting the Azerbaijani government in the future.
