Russia Designated as State Sponsor of Terrorism by Slovak Parliament

Slovakian lawmakers have designated Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism and called the current Russian regime terrorist, condemning yet again Moscow’s aggression against Ukraine and expressing support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Adopted the Slovakian National Council of the Slovak Republic on February 16, the resolution also condemned Moscow’s direct and indirect threats to use nuclear weapons in its ongoing war in Ukraine as well as Russian troops’ missile strikes against civilians, civil objects, and the energy infrastructure of Ukraine.

It expresses clear support for efforts to establish a special tribunal for the prosecution of crimes of aggression in Ukraine and the prosecution of crimes made by Russia against humanity and war crimes.

At the same time, Slovakian National Assembly underscored in the resolution that Slovakia does not recognize the results of the referendums in Ukraine’s regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, and considers the territories to remain part of Ukraine.

Condemning the hybrid war that Russia wages also on the territory of Slovakia, Slovakian MPs called on law enforcement authorities, secret services, and other competent authorities not to underestimate the threat, but to take effective measures against it in order to maintain Slovakian security and democracy.

In its resolution, Slovakia follows the steps of Poland’s Sejm which recognized Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism in December, and the Czech parliament that has passed a similar decision was passed in November.

The Polish resolution stated that the Seym of the Republic of Poland recognizes the Russian Federation as a state supporting terrorism and using terrorist measures, accusing Russia of systematic violation of human rights, international law, and the United Nations Charter along with a number of other commitments by invading the territories of other countries and committing armed attacks, war crimes and genocide.

The Polish parliament has also directly pointed to Russia as directly responsible for the downing of the Malaysian Airlines flight (MH17) in July 2014, killing 298 passengers and crew members but also for April 2010 the crash of the Polish Air Force flight in Smolensk which killed the President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, among 96 people on board.
