Food for the Hungry (FH) is urgently looking for donations to support its response to needs caused by the strong 7.8-magnitude earthquake and devastating aftershocks that occurred early on Monday, February 5th along the Gaziantep province in Turkey (Türkiye), severely affecting the area and livelihoods nearby, including Northern Syria, a press release reads.
The devastating earthquake, which caused thousands of fatalities, was one of the strongest to strike the area in the recent 100 years. Sadly, more than 7,200 people have perished, and as many individuals are still buried under the rubble, the death toll is likely to increase. The onground situation has worsened as a result of numerous powerful aftershocks that occurred in the hours after the earthquake, including one that was recorded at a magnitude of 7.5.
Together with other NGOs active in the region and local partners, FH continues to assess the situation and plan solutions in both countries. Distribution of food, water, and non-food things like toiletries will probably be a part of interventions.
