Under Temporary Refuge, UNHCR offers help and protection to those fleeing Ukraine in support of the government of Slovakia, a UNHCR factsheet states.

At registration centers and border crossing locations, UNHCR and its partners monitor and profile vulnerable individuals to spot problems, offer assistance, and make referrals.

The Refugee Response Plan (RRP) is being coordinated by UNHCR to assist Ukrainian refugees as well as citizens and governments of receiving nations.

Key Figures:

  • Non-Slovak arrivals from Ukraine since February 24, 2022, total 1,129,733.
  • Total non-Slovak departures to Ukraine since February 24, 2022, are 914,968.
  • When Ukrainians arrive in Slovakia, 78% of them are female and have children.
  • Slovakia received 107,515 requests for Temporary Protection status.
  • Over 58,000 refugees and vulnerable third-country nationals have signed up for interagency cash assistance, and UNHCR gave cash assistance for the winter to 19,782 people.

Since the conflict in Ukraine began, Slovakia has changed from a transit to a destination country, with over a million arrivals by the end of 2022 and more than 100,000 people requesting Temporary Protection status here.

The initial influx has calmed, but because of Ukraine’s precarious security situation, there is still a chance that there may be a significant evacuation in the future. Many refugees have remained in Slovakia, but some have relocated to other nations in Europe and beyond.

In order to help coordination for the response, provide protection, life-saving financial aid, and other support in line with the Government-led initiatives, UNHCR has increased its presence.

As of the end of 2022, the UNHCR Multi-Country Office (encompassing the Czech Republic, Hungary, Republic of Slovakia, and Slovenia) has a total of US$ 57.6 million in reported contributions. Donors who contributed to this operation as well as those who gave to UNHCR programs with broadly allocated and unearmarked cash made a crucial contribution, and UNHCR is appreciative of their support. The total amount of registered contributions for 2023 is US$ 8.5 million thus far.
