On Monday, a supposedly kamikaze drone again struck the Ukrainian city of Kyiv. Early in the morning, an alarm was initially sent, DW reports.
In the metropolis of Kyiv, 18 out of 23 drones, according to authorities, were shot down. Although it was unclear if the early morning explosions were caused by drones being shot down by air defenses or by strikes touching down, according to witnesses who say that they had heard big bangs.
Russia launched 35 drones at Ukraine early on Monday when most people were still sleeping, striking vital infrastructure in and around Kyiv in Russia’s third airstrike on Kyiv in six days, Ukraine’s Air Force has said.
Some 30 inbound drones were shot down by air defenses, according to the Ukrainian military.
Energoatom, the Ukrainian nuclear agency, said that a Russian “kamikaze” drone had flown over a section of the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant shortly after midnight.
“This is an absolutely unacceptable violation of nuclear and radiation safety,” Energoatom said on the Telegram messaging app.
Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, requested that a variety of weapons systems be sent to him during a summit of Western leaders taking place in Latvia.
Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden make up the British-led alliance, which is designed to act quickly in the event of emergencies in northern Europe.
He requested Sweden’s production of Gripen fighter jets, RBS 98 missiles, and Archer artillery along with additional NASAMS launchers and missiles built in Norway and Sweden, respectively.
Additionally, Zelenskyy requested that Lithuania provide NASAMS and Stinger missiles, Latvia provide artillery, Estonia provide howitzers and ammo, Denmark provide Ceasar howitzers to Ukraine, and Finland provide additional ammunition shells.
Although Ukraine has received assistance from Western allies, led by the United States, in the form of financing, military training, and the delivery of air defense systems and other weapons, Kiev has claimed that more is still required to back its offensive against Russia.
